Clearing advice

Clearing doesn't need to be difficult! Read our tips below to get the most out of Clearing.

You may have chosen to apply for university via Clearing or maybe your exams didn't go to plan. Whatever your individual situation, don't panic! We're here to help you get ready for Clearing and get started on your future.

There's plenty of information on this page to help you prepare. Details of how and when to contact us can be found on our main Clearing page

Before you get your results

  • Do your research before results day and make sure you have a good back up plan just in case you don't do as well as you hoped
  • List other universities and courses that you might be interested in following up
  • Consider what's important to you: Course? Living near home? Being able to commute? Campus or city university?
  • Talk with your school or college about different courses that could still take you towards your chosen career
  • Remember entry requirements during Clearing can be more flexible
  • Call or arrange visits to universities you're interested in and speak to course leaders/admissions tutors to find out more.

On A-level results day

  • Don't panic!
  • Have your details to hand - make sure you have all the facts you need written down including your main details and your results
  • Be persistent, stay positive and keep calling. If your first choice is a no, try them again later in case entry requirements have changed
  • Be patient - phone lines can be busy but you will get through
  • If you're offered a place, ask about accommodation and find out how to apply
  • Find out if you can visit the campus in person or virtually.
