We're passionate about our teaching and you'll be part of a dynamic and engaging community of learning. Dissertations and research projects are supervised by experts in the field.
World-class research
World-leading research that informs our teaching. We are a top UK department for research excellence according to the Research Excellence Framework 2021 results, which found that 100% of our research impact was 4* world-leading, attaining the highest standard of excellence nationally. Our world-class researchers teach at all levels of our degree courses, giving you the opportunity to learn from researchers at the forefront of the discipline.
State-of-the-art facilities
Excellent facilities are available for both teaching and research. We have our own magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, used to measure brain activity in experiments. Other facilities include apparatus to stimulate areas in the brain (TMS), instruments for recording electrical changes in the brain (EEG), eye-tracking, body movement tracking, sleep lab for investigating brain activity during sleep, and a dedicated ‘baby lab’ for studying the development of young infants.
Excellent career prospects
Our varied programme of innovative courses and placement opportunities through established connections equip students with a wide portfolio of transferable skills, giving you the edge in your career path. 90% of our graduates go on to work or further study within six months of graduating (DLHE, 2018).
Supporting equality
We are committed to support equality and foster an inclusive environment for everyone. We have an equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) working group and have developed a range of initiatives and events to recognise and embrace the diversity in the department. Our department was one of the first three psychology departments to hold Silver Athena Swan status (renewed in 2023).
