The Charter provides a framework through which institutions including Royal Holloway understand and tackle barriers standing in the way of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students. The 12 strong committee will provide guidance to the Advance HE Board amongst others on matters relating to the Race Equality Charter (REC).

Narender Ramnani said, “I have seen at first hand the ways in which the current form of the REC drives changes in institutions, but realise that it also has the potential to develop in new and exciting directions. I’m really looking forward to playing a role in its evolution.”

The REC Governance Committee will hold its first meeting at the start of the new academic year.

In March, Professor Ramnani was elected to the Council of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. Since 1939 the organisation has served as a point of liaison between Members of both Houses of Parliament and scientific bodies, science-based industry and academia. Its Council is responsible for providing direction, management and operations.

Professor Narender Ramnani brings considerable experience and expertise to these roles having served on the governing body of the British Neuroscience Association continuously since 2005. He was also a member of the two teams that led Royal Holloway to win REC awards in 2015 and 2019, and he led the Department of Psychology’s Athena SWAN team to win a Silver Athena SWAN award in 2016. Professor Ramnani continues to serve on Institutional Athena SWAN and REC teams as they work towards the renewal of these awards.
