Placements

There is a wealth of connections with policymakers, business and industry experts among the staff in the Department of Politics and International Relations.

Our innovative placement scheme

Our students have the opportunity to add an extra dimension to their qualification through the placement-based course Politics in Action. This is an assessed, full-year optional course that our undergraduate students can take in their third year of study.

The scheme was launched in 2014 and has seen students successfully complete placements in Westminster, local government bodies, national and international NGOs, embassies, media organisations, and many more politics-related workplaces.

Politics in Action has a novel structure that combines participation in a workplace environment for one day a week during term time, a career development training course in collaboration with Royal Holloway Careers and Employability Service, and an engaging academic work programme that encourages you to conduct research on a topic related to your placement work.

Networking opportunities

There are numerous opportunities to gain practical experience in all kinds of fields by getting involved with our student societies. For instance, the PIR Society are active in a number of annual conferences where you will have the chance to apply your skills to real-life situations, such as the National Model United Nations conference in New York, at which we have an enviable record of success.
