Which of our degrees is right for you?

On our undergraduate programme we offer 3-year BSc and 4-year MSci degrees in Physics and a range of associated specialisms including Astrophysics, Particle Physics, and Theoretical Physics, as well as a joint honours course in Mathematics and Physics, and Physics with an Integrated Foundation Year.

The entrance requirements for both the BSc and the MSci single honours degrees are listed on our coursefinder section. There is a high degree of flexibility to change between them in the early stages of the degree, so the decision made at enrolment is not crucial. Our normal advice is that if you think that you might want to pursue a research career you should choose the MSci as this opens the door to future PhD programmes, if however, you are studying physics as a skills-based, analytical, technical degree to act as a stepping stone to a career in a wide range of industries then the shorter BSc helps you reach this goal sooner.

In addition, we offer two Physics ‘with’ 3-year BSc degrees in which the split is 75 % physics: 25 % ‘with subject’. In partnership with our excellent music department, we offer a BSc in Physics with Music, and we also offer the interdisciplinary BSc Physics with Philosophy degree with the Department of Philosophy.

Physics with a Year Abroad and Physics with a Year in Industry are not offered as degree courses but are available to successful students, tailored individually to meet your specific requirements. In addition, the University offers a year out a scheme that gives you the opportunity to study abroad; carry out a work placement or work on humanitarian projects.

All of our degrees are accredited by the Institute of Physics, where “The Panel commended the department for the consideration given to the Core of Physics as coverage was found to be very good”.
