Dr Daniel Elphick speaks on BBC Surrey Radio

  • Date13 June 2018

Teaching Fellow Daniel Elphick responds to comments by You Me At Six lead singer Josh Franceschi that rock musicians need to ‘up their game’.

BBC Newsbeat ran an article featuring Franceschi's comments, suggesting that rock bands are losing out to musicians in other genres, such as hip-hop or EDM, because they have become ‘lazy'. Franceschi suggested that rock musicians needed to be more productive and spend longer amounts of time in the studio in order to remain competitive with these genres.

In his BBC Surrey Radio interview, Dr Elphick cites wider social trends that have contributed to the ongoing success of hip-hop and EDM, not just musicians’ studio time, as well as pointing to the ongoing diversity and success of rock bands in the contemporary popular music scene.
