Catherine Keele successfully defended her PhD thesis.

Catherine’s thesis titled "Using Encoding to Reduce the Errors in Quantum Spin Chains" shows how noise and fabrication errors affect quantum spin chains. In the thesis, she introduces an encoding technique to reduce the effects of both noise and defects without needing full error correction. She also demonstrates that the technique can be extended to include multiple excitations. Catherine was supervised by Dr. Alastair Kay and the examiners were Professor Rüdiger Schack (RHUL) and Christino Tamon (Clarkson University). 

Catherine was an active member of the PhD community helping at several outreach events and being the driving force for many WISDOM initiatives. 

Catherine is now working for the NHS as part of the Scientist Training Programme, to train to become a clinical scientist in medical physics. This role will include work with medical imaging systems, nuclear medicine, and radiotherapy. We wish her all the best! Congratulations and good luck!
