Prof Nucinkis helps support early career researchers

  • Date14 July 2020

Prof Nucinkis has been a member of the governing body, the Council, of the London Mathematical Society since 2017. (Despite its name, the London Mathematical Society is the national learned society for mathematics, and has been publishing, organising and funding mathematics since its foundation in 1865.)

As Chair of the Society Lectures and Meetings committee, she has a particular interest in sustaining a strong, diverse and inclusive mathematics research community during the current pandemic. The Council has recently announced new support for early career researchers in the form of funded introductory lecture series for PhD students, delivered by lecturers who are not yet in their first permanent position. This allows lecturers and students to talk to a wide range of researchers, something that is hard when all research meetings are cancelled or postponed. Prof Nucinkis writes "I am particularly pleased to be part of this process: alleviating some of the worst consequences of the pandemic for early career researchers will be of great benefit for years to come."
