Why pedestrian bridges wobble - synchronisation and the wisdom of the crowd

Professor Alan Champneys
Department of Engineering Mathematics
University of Bristol

The instability of the London Millennium Bridge on the day it opened is widely held as a paradigm of the beautiful mathematical theory of synchrony of coupled oscillators. Looking deeper, all is not what it seems. This talk shall therefore reflect on the nature of mathematical modelling and the interplay between mathematics, engineering and the real world.
