Inspired by the British Library exhibition ‘Unfinished Business: The Fight for Women’s Rights’ starting in April 2020, this six-week course explores the global perspective on women’s rights.

Global human rights are supposed to apply to all humans everywhere. Their underlying purpose is to respect the human dignity and human freedom of everyone. During this course, critiques of the human rights of women are explored from a variety of perspectives. Some people see the potential and value of human rights and their international legal framework to enable and empower girls and women, as well as boys and men, to live good, fulfilling, free and safe lives. Others advocate radical restructurings of the global international world order with deep scepticism of a ‘rights’ approach.

Through a combination of talks, discussion and visits to the exhibition, this course will enable those who attend to develop their own ideas about global women’s rights.
