The department has also been judged to be within the upper quartile of results for 4 star research impact. And in the Times Higher Education's analysis, we were ranked 5th in the UK by Grade Point Average for overall research submitted by the department to REF 2021.

We believe that this affirms our commitment to world-leading research that has a real and meaningful impact in society, and also on our students, whose teaching is shaped by the innovative research our staff carry out. Drawing on our strengths in visual cultures across geographical and linguistic boundaries, our two impact case studies – led by Dr Ruth Hemus and Prof Eric Robertson – showcase our expertise in the art and literature of the avant-garde.

We are delighted with the outcome, which reflects a broader departmental commitment to impact and knowledge exchange. This is apparent in our vibrant Centre for Visual Cultures, which highlights many of our collaborative research initiatives.
