Power and Resistance Taster Day

  • Date21 November 2017

Rethinking Race and Imperialism in the Modern World

BlackLivesMatter

3 December 2017, 10.30-16.00.

This taster day will be of interest to students who would like to learn more about how race and imperialism have shaped the modern world, and especially to students studying Nazi Germany, the Making of Modern Britain, the British Empire or American History.

Lecture

The day starts with a lecture from prize-winning author and noted expert, Professor Humayun Ansari. Humayun will be discussing the important issue of Islamophobia in Britain, both from a historical and modern-day perspective.

Seminar

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a seminar session, in which they will explore key themes in greater depth and under the guidance of an expert historian. By focusing closely on primary source documents, these seminars will also provide visiting students with an intimate understanding of how history is studied at university. Seminar choices will explore a diverse array of topics: sign up for seminars will take place during registration on the taster day itself.

Workshops

The day will feature a tour of the Royal Holloway campus and the Victorian Founder’s Building. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to attend a question and answer session on Studying History at University and on transitioning from sixth form to university.
