The results indicate that the interdisciplinary work at Royal Holloway across departments and schools around health is increasing and has a promising future, and the new Department of Health Studies can establish itself on the excellent performance of this first-time submission. The health unit assessment revealed that;

50% of research impact was in the 4* category - the highest standard of world-leading research in terms of originality, significance and rigour

71% of research overall was judged to be world-leading and internationally excellent

75% of research output was judged to be world-leading and internationally excellent

87.5% of research environment was judged to be world-leading and internationally excellent

This is an encouraging set of results for a growing area of activity based across several departments and schools. It indicates a future where our new department can make important progress to health and environmental agendas as a hub for world-leading research, knowledge exchange and public engagement moving forward.

The results not only demonstrate that our research is having world-leading impact and bringing benefits to wider society, it also reinforces that our students are joining an intellectually stimulating environment with teaching from world-class experts in their fields.

The REF provides a robust and thorough assessment of the quality of universities’ research in all disciplines, providing accountability for public investment in research and demonstrating the benefits of that investment.
