Research partners

Collaborative relationships form a key part of our approach to research.  These collaborations are with other academic institutions, governmental and non-governmental organisations throughout the world. Some collaborations have included joint PhD supervision.

GDSJ is characterised by its formal research collaborations with local, national and international partners, from international NGOs to independent monitoring bodies.  This commitment to working in partnership is also reflected in the strong track record of ESRC collaborative PhD studentships which academic staff have developed and supervised (including Practical Action, StreetInvest, Water Aid).  Members have also attracted AHRC and AHRC TECHNE funding for collaborative doctoral research with a range of partners (including the British Library, Science Museum, Royal Botanical Garden, Kew and Royal Geographical Society).  Many GDSJ members write for policy and public audiences (e.g. flagship reports and background papers for UN bodies) and are called upon regularly by UK and international media in connection to either their country or thematic expertise.  GDSJ members also have experience of advising government in official and unofficial capacities (e.g. via Select Committees or closed-door meetings) and have been invited expert witnesses in legal cases.
