The National Student Survey (NSS) 2019, published on 3rd July 2019, shows that the Department of Geography has again scored 96% for overall student satisfaction. This maintains a remarkable pattern of positive student assessment year on year, matching the Department’s average score since the NSS scoring system began in 2007, and also scoring higher than all of the Russell Group universities which appear in the 2019 survey.

In the 2020 Guardian subject league tables the Department was ranked 1st in the UK for ‘satisfied with teaching’ and 3rd in the UK for ‘satisfied with course’.* Notably, the Department of Geography pairs outstanding student satisfaction with research excellence, having also been ranked 2nd in the UK’s last national ‘research excellence framework’.**

Head of Geography, Professor Philip Crang, commented: “Royal Holloway’s Department of Geography is a wonderful place to study and to teach. We are very proud that our undergraduate students are so satisfied with their courses. It’s especially pleasing to see that they feel in equal measure intellectually stretched and supported. As a Department, we look to combine great teaching and learning with world-leading research, within a friendly and supportive intellectual community. These latest NSS results are testament to that special combination.”

The NSS is an independent student survey carried out by the Office for Students on behalf of the UK higher education funding and regulatory bodies.
