Geography students win prizes for campus sustainability solutions
Geography students are leading the way in providing the College with ideas on how to address sustainability of the campus. Working with the Estates Department and through Dr David Haygarth, Head of Energy and Sustainability, second year students studying Environmental Systems developed proposals on improving waste management, water use, energy reduction, transportation and procurement amongst staff and students across campus. In recognition, Head of Estates Mike Berry put forward prizes and the winners were:
Lily Galek - Thought Leadership 1st Place (£120) and best overall submission for the proposal “Implementing LEDs within Sutherland House”
Holly Lintern - Thought leadership 2nd Place (£80) for the proposal “Solar panels on the Sports Centre”
Milena Wajda - Innovation 1st Place (£120) for the proposal “To increase energy sustainability at RHUL Sports Centre through installation of piezoelectric floor tiles”
Elizabeth Mutton - Innovation 2nd Place (£80) for the proposal “A compostable packaging proposal for RHUL”
Jonathan Cantwell - Greatest impact 1st Place (£120) for the proposal “Improving the thermal efficiency of Founders Building through enhanced window insulation”
Polly Davies - Greatest impact 2nd Place (£80) for the proposal “Proposing the use of smart meters and financial sanctions for students according to personal gas usage”
Collecting their prizes from Will Lindsay, Sustainable Projects Manager, on behalf of Mike Berry, the students highlighted the sustainability concerns and challenges that had initiated their ideas and discussed how their proposals could fit into wider College policies and practices.
Will commented “It’s fantastic to hear about all of the exciting ideas that our Geography students are keen to share with the College. We look forward to considering them all in future”.
