The Electronic Engineering department in partnership with the UK Electronic Skills Foundation hosted a day-long event aimed at inspiring the next generation of female engineers.
Since its founding, Royal Holloway, University of London has had a long history in women’s education. The Department of Electronic Engineering is proud to continue this tradition: 50% of our senior staff are female and women make up 23% of its engineering undergraduates – much higher than the 15% national average. We want to give as many women as possible the opportunity to make a difference through engineering, which is why we teamed-up with the UK Electronic Skills Foundation to run a full day of “Girls Into Electronics” events.
Over 30 female students from 6th Formers and Year 11 visited the Electronic Engineering department to take part. The day started with a hands-on lab, building circuits to create timing pulses. The students then learned about the programming language Python and got to practice writing their own code. After that, they were able to find out about what studying Electronic Engineering is like, including a chat with some of our recent graduates and current undergraduates. Next, they created prototype circuits with the Grove Arduino, which they got to take home with them. The day finished with an inspirational tour of the department, showing the prototype products that our undergraduates had created as part of their team projects, such as autonomous mini-drone.
When asked how the day went, one student said:
“Very supportive teachers and students, great opportunity to learn about electrical engineering first-hand. Thank you!”
Dr Anush Yardim, Director of Industrial Liaison and lead organiser of the event, said
“It’s been a brilliant day! The girls really benefitted from being in a supportive environment and everyone enjoyed the day!”
Following the success of this year’s event, the Department of Electronic Engineering are already planning to run the event next year.
