The links between teaching and research are important for any contemporary course environment. As a leading department for economic research and teaching, we have an strong reputation for being research that speaks to the global challenges of our time and for being able to incorporate our expertise into our teaching to deliver courses that are engaging, relevant, skill-emphasizing, and that ready our students for making a difference in the world!

Students have returned consistently positive results about the teaching environment within the department, and flourish in their studies year on year. 

We're careful to listen to what you have to say about the department, and are always looking to improve the student experience. On the basis of previous results from the NSS, we have responded by introducing new initiatives, such as the Student Mentoring Scheme to support first years more effectively, and the Economics@Work programme to enhance our students' employability post-graduation.

Your future beyond graduation is what we're always building towards, and we take preparing you for the workplace or further study very seriously. In addition to the Careers Centre on campus, as a department we oversee an Economics@Work programme which gives students the chance to network with professionals, receive presentations from experts in various fields and gain more of an insight into their area of particular interest.

All our single-honours courses share a common first year. This offers maximum flexibility to follow your interests by moving between courses and tailoring your degree as you progress.

Each undergraduate course is structured through a system of ‘course modules’, some of which are compulsory and some optional. The individual modules comprise a range of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, tutorials and practicals. Assessment methods also vary from written exams, to problem-solving exercises, presentations and portfolios.

The beautiful, leafy Surrey campus is a great place to work, study and socialise, with great links to Southwest London, London Waterloo, Windsor and Reading.

Facilities in the Economics department are state-of-the-art with the construction of a brand new Data Science lab within our very own Horton Building that will benefit all our students.
