Undergraduate study

Undergraduate study

We are one of the largest university theatre departments in the UK, so we can offer an unusually wide range of subject areas, all taught by specialists.

No other department offers courses covering a comparable range of historical and cultural areas.

Our teaching is always on the cutting edge of the subject, so the curriculum never remains quite the same from one year to the next.  We value the work you produce during your course, and do not use exams for assessment.

Great contacts

We have innumerable close contacts with some of the key theatre makers of our time, who are regularly involved with our department, working with and teaching students.

Recent visiting professors and practitioners include playwrights Tim Crouch, Mark Ravenhill and Tanika Gupta, director Katie Mitchell, and choreographers Jonathan Burrows and Jasmin Vardimon.

We also have a growing placement scheme for our students to gain first-hand experience of theatre work.

Great facilities

Drama is a specialist subject and needs specialist facilities. Most importantly, it needs performance spaces. At Royal Holloway, we are lucky enough to have probably the best facilities for studying and making theatre in any British university.

Our state-of-the-art Caryl Churchill Theatre, the authentic Japanese Handa Noh Theatre, and the beautiful Boilerhouse Theatre, with its under dance floor heating, make up the core of our facilities. These spaces are complemented by a suite of rehearsal rooms, seminar rooms, and workshop spaces.
