Roundtable: ‘Race’ and racism in the Classical World and its Reception

On 8^th June 2022, the Centre for the Reception of Greece and Rome hosted an online roundtable considering the theme of ‘race’ and racism in the Roman world, and its reception. The contributions, from Nandini Pandey (Johns Hopkins University), Lylaah Bhalerao (New York University), Bet Hucks (Heidelberg University), and Sam Agbamu (RHUL) considered the theme from a broad range of perspectives. Issues such as the problems of periodisation, improving accessibility to the study of Rome for marginalised scholars through innovative technologies such as 3D printing, ‘diversity’ as a tool of Roman imperial domination, and embodied approaches to looking at ‘race’ in the ancient world prompted a productive discussion with attendees drawn from across the world. We are now considering next steps to continue the conversation so watch this space!
