Professor of Marketing Chris Hackley has been quoted in The Times article ‘Back-to-the-future advertising puts new products in old shows’ (subscription required). The article explores a technique that allows brands appearing in the scene of TV shows and movies viewed on digital devices to be changed depending on the viewer.

Hackley commented that this raises several potential problems, including existing concern from consumers about cookie technology that allows advertisers to track their online activity to place related advertisements, as well as the risk of brand placements being ill-fitted to the time period and genre of the movie and subsequent audience objection to this. While acknowledging the benefits to brands, Hackley also pointed out potential issues with copyright and advertising regulation.

Professor of Marketing Andreas Chatzidakis and Lecturer in Marketing Vera Hoelscher recently spoke at the Liverpool Fashion Summit, with Andreas focusing on the intersection of consumption with ethics and politics and Vera on ethical consumption.
