Students vote Biological Sciences Department of the Year!

  • Date18 July 2017

This year's Laurel Awards, set up by Royal Holloway's Student Union, saw the School of Biological Sciences voted as Department of the Year. This award recognises the academic department that has worked to integrate the Course Representative system in their department, effecting change and enhancing the student experience.

Natasha Barrett, Student Union President said:

"Deciding our winner for this award was tough, but one department stood out in particular, with multiple nominations from students across the board. I have heard a lot about how this department supports students transitioning from UG to PG, to PhDs and even into future careers.

This can be particularly hard and the level of engagement here is truly fantastic, allowing a reduction in student anxiety. They work closely with their academic society who have created some fantastic schemes, set up now annual events and integrated closely with some of our best Course Reps.

Students have described a feeling of community within the department and feel able to approach any staff member with a query or if they simply need a supportive chat. They feel respected and personally valued which promotes hard work and fantastic results.

Having heard this feedback from so many members of this department over the past year I am very pleased to award Department of the Year to Biological Sciences."
