Pascal Theatre Company: Opportunities for involvement in community heritage project

  • Date17 January 2023

Pascal Theatre Company has received National Lottery Heritage funding for a two-year community heritage project 'Women for Women: 19th century women in Bloomsbury'. The aim of the project is to highlight some key women who lived, worked, studied or networked in Bloomsbury, London, exploring the challenges they faced and celebrating their achievements.

They are building up a section on the Pascal Theatre Company website 'Women for Women'. The idea is to have different subject areas, for example medicine, writing, social activism and so on, which will contain short introductions to women's access to, or involvement in, these areas. The subject area will also contain mini biographies of key figures and contributions from those with a specialist interest in, or knowledge of, a woman in the form of tributes - Georgina Weldon and Beatrice Webb are two existing examples.

They are using their research to inform workshops they run with children, 'older people' and intergenerational groups and to inspire different events aiming to raise wider public awareness of this social history. Dancing, Trailblazing, Taboo! Eleanor Marx: A Life in Movement was a dance-theatre event they ran focussing on the life and work of Eleanor Marx performed at the Bloomsbury Festival.

Pascal Theatre company are looking for volunteers to research key figures (relevant to their chosen subject area) and write tributes. Contributors are welcome to reference their own work. For those who have a particular interest in the history of Bedford College, there are College archives with a wealth of material. Not only is the founding of the College fascinating but so too the achievements of some of its first students. However, researchers do not need to be based in the area nor focus on the College history. They also sometimes look for trainers to run community workshops and/or get involved in the production of events.

They would love to hear from anyone who would like to know more and, hopefully, become involved. For more information, please contact Sally at sally@pascal-theatre.com
