The courses on offer are in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin and will begin next month on 8 October. They will cater for people starting from scratch, those with some knowledge of the language and those who already have experience of learning the language.

The classes will be held at Royal Holloway’s Egham campus and will run for 20 weeks. Each class will last two hours, so there will be a total of 40 hours of tuition delivered by experienced language teachers.

Odile Rimbert, Director of the Languages for All programme said: “Learning a foreign language is an extremely valuable and transferable skill, whether that’s for business where it can increase your employability or simply for pleasure where it can make travel a more interesting experience.

“We are able to draw on the great talents of our academics to teach these languages. The courses are offered to staff and students, but we wanted to make them available to people from outside the university.

“We have run this programme for four years and it has been very popular. This year we have added Mandarin as we know there is an increasing interest in this language,” said Odile.

The cost of the course is £200 for one term or £300 for two terms.
