Volunteering

Our student volunteers play a crucial role in helping to make the Picture Gallery and Art Collections accessible and enjoyable to a wide variety of visitors.

What’s involved?

Volunteers welcome visitors to the Picture Gallery during public opening hours, answer questions about the collections from visitors, record visitor numbers and their feedback, and help with lunchtime talks.

Volunteering Opportunities

We have now reached our maximum Picture Gallery volunteer number for term 1 2023/24. Please check back in term 2 to see if spaces become available.

We are looking for friendly volunteers to join the Culture team in welcoming visitors to our Grade 1 listed Picture Gallery on Wednesdays in Autumn and Spring terms 2023/24. You will be the face of the Gallery, greeting our visitors and letting them know about our interpretation app Smartify. As you get to know the collection, you will be able to speak to visitors about the paintings and give a short talk on a painting of your choice as part of our lunchtime talks series.

Find out more and apply via the Volunteering Hub.

Our volunteers are invited to participate in the Lunchtime Talks programme, in which volunteers research and deliver 5-10 minute talks on one painting on Wednesday lunchtimes.

Check our events page for details on our next talk.
